Background
While on assignment shooting for the HSBC World Rugby 7s, a request was put in to refresh the design to be shown on the extremely large, animated, retractable roof-top display of the Singapore National Stadium, a 55,000-pax, 83m tall multi-purpose stadium in Singapore, the center piece of Singapore Sports Hub. As of 2024, it is the largest dome structure on Earth. (a record held for 11 years and counting) Understandably I was extremely excited for the opportunity for my work to be shown on a Singapore landmark, as well as a city skyline for the first time, I immediately agreed and offered to provide a design.
OBJECTIVE (THE BRIEF)
Design a quick, looping animation that would encapsulate the Rugby event weekend. Requirements were that the concept of the HSBC Rugby ball be incorporated in some way.
Final design:
Some behind the scenes of creating the prolate elliptical spheroid of the International Rugby Union, fun fact it is very hard to model this unique shape in After Effects. Also, half way through the event I was tasked to create an extra animation for whenever tries were made. It was to play on the ceiling for spectators to read, hence I had to laterally mirror the text which took some tinkering to get the right orientation. It was very rewarding seeing my design on the ceiling right away!
